Waterton
Waterton and Area

Trail History

Waterton Lakes National Park has been called the “Jewel of the Chinook Country.” Yet it remains a relatively well-kept secret even though it is a World Heritage Site. It’s a place where you’ll see rolling prairie give way to woodland, glacial ice sheets and mountains that rise to almost 3,000 metres – all within a distance of less than one kilometre. It’s a magical place full of wildlife and wildflowers, where the wind and the scenery might just take your breath away.

A short drive south of Waterton, on the road to Cardston, Chief Mountain dominates the horizon. The Blackfoot call it Ninastako – the mountain that stands apart. For them it is a sacred spot where ancient stories took place. It is actually located just across the border in Montana, but on a clear day (and there are many of them in this part of the country), you can see it for miles and miles (or is that kilometres and kilometres)?

In Cardston, not only can you enjoy the Remington Carriage Museum, which houses the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in North America, but you can end the day with fine dining at a restaurant built by a mad man and then sit back and enjoy some live theatre on a warm summer evening.

Side Trails

Head east a few miles on Hwy 501 to go river rafting on the St Mary River or check out the Whiskey Gap hills where NWMP and bootleggers competed to control the whiskey trade coming into Canada from Montana.

East of Waterton on the way to Cardston is the scenic community of Mountain View, home of the Mountain View Market and close to Payne Lake. Pick up some picnic supplies to enjoy in this beautiful park or go for a trail ride with Mountain Meadow Trail Rides.
