Bar U Ranch National Historic Site

Ride into history and discover ranching life from the late 1800s at Bar U Ranch National Historic Site. Try your hand at ranching skills, wander through historic buildings, or sit around the campfire and listen to old-time tales. Back-dropped by the Rocky Mountains – a true Alberta experience!

Open May through September, Bar U Ranch National Historic Site is a 100 km drive southwest of Calgary, Alberta on Highway 22 (also known as The Cowboy Trail). Plan at least a half day to fully experience interpretive programs and to explore the historic ranch core.

Explore the headquarters of the once-mighty Bar U Ranch. Hitch a ride on a wagon drawn by Percheron horses. Learn to rope a steer, saddle a horse, repair a bridle or sip hot cowboy coffee around the campfire at the roundup chuck wagon beside Pekisko Creek. Reconnect with the land on Canada’s ranch!

One of the largest collections of original buildings in Canada. Treasures include the blacksmith shop, harness repair shop, roundup camp and saddlehorse barn. Taste the freshly-baked cookies at the cookhouse, hear the clattering hooves of our Percheron team and smell the cowboy coffee roasting over an open fire. Experience life on the ranch from 100 years ago.
